Humboldt County is the oldest county in Nevada, created by the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1856. It was also one of Nevada’s original nine counties created in 1861. The county is named after the Humboldt River, which was named by John C. Frémont after Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist, traveler and statesman.[8] Humboldt never saw the places that bear his name. Unionville was the first county seat in 1861 until the mining boom died there and it was moved to Winnemucca on the transcontinental railroad line in 1873.
Climate & Geography
Humboldt County is located in the rugged high desert region of north-central Nevada, bordered on the north by Oregon and by neighboring Nevada counties to the west, south and east. The County’s 9,626 square miles offer some of the most varied, spectacular scenery in the State and a wide array of recreational opportunities.
Industry The County’s economy is derived in large part from its main industries:
- Agriculture and Agricultural Services
- Mining
- Tourism and Construction
The County is located in the rich gold mining center of the Western U.S and is the leading agricultural county in the State of Nevada with over 100,000 acres under cultivation. Tourism is also a large part of the County’s economic base due to the large numbers of visitors the gaming industry brings to the area and the draw of the beautiful wide open spaces, historical sites, and great hunting and fishing.

Winnemucca has never laid claim to being the oldest settlement in the state, but its location has been more or less continuously occupied since about1830 when beaver trappers like Peter Ogden established a camp here on what they called Marys River.
Twenty years later, when westward bound wagon trains began using the Humboldt Trail, the trading post on the southern bank of the river at Graveley Ford came to be called Frenchmans Ford, and by 1863 when it was renamed for the last time, in honor of the principal Paiute chief of the region, a rough settlement had grown up along the river bank.
